If you're unhappy with the appearance of your smile and are looking for a quick cosmetic treatment, teeth whitening is usually the way to go. But, before scheduling your appointment, Dr. Richard Donkersgoed will ask you if you have any dental crowns or fillings.
Why does it matter?
It's because this type of dental work doesn't respond to whitening.
Here's what you should know.
Why Teeth Whitening and Dental Crowns or Fillings Don't Go Well Together
Teeth whitening treatments use a bleaching agent like hydrogen peroxide that breaks down the stain molecules. The substance penetrates the enamel and removes stains from below the surface of the tooth.
But, dental crowns and fillings are made from synthetic materials. They are not as porous as your natural teeth and the bleaching agent can't penetrate them.
Now, if the crown or filling is in the back of your mouth and not visible, then you can probably whiten your teeth without worrying about the results too much. But, if the restoration is more visible, then whitening your teeth will lead to an uneven smile - your teeth will change color while the crown will remain the same.
What Can You Do Instead
Knowing that this is an issue, you can now plan any cosmetic changes in advance. For example, you can first whiten your teeth and then get cosmetic treatments like crowns, fillings, or veneers in the new color of your teeth.
You can also maintain your smile for longer by seeing your dentist regularly for professional cleanings. While these cleanings won't make a dramatic change, they can remove some surface stains and make your smile appear a bit brighter and healthier.
If both your teeth and crowns or fillings are stained, you could consider replacing them. Dental crowns often lose their color and brightness as they're approaching the end of their lifespan. If you had yours for quite a while now, it may be time to replace them. Again, make sure to whiten your teeth first and then get a dental crown to match your smile.
